  • Abstract: In the competitive market , virtual teams represent a growing response to the need for fasting time-to-market, low-cost and rapid solutions to complex organizational problems. Virtual teams enable organizations to pool the talents and expertise of employees and non-employees by eliminating time and space barriers . Nowadays companies are heavily investing in virtual team to enhance their performance and competitiveness . Despite virtual team growing prevalence, relatively little is known about this new form of team. Hence the study offers an extensive literature review with definitions of virtual teams and a structured analysis of the present body of knowledge of virtual teams. First, we distinguish virtual teams from conventional teams, different types of virtual teams to identify where current knowledge applies. Second, we distinguish what is needed for effective virtual team considering the people, process and technology point of view and underlying characteristics of virtual teams and challenges the entail. Finally we have identified an d ext en d ed 12 key factors that need to be considered, and describes a methodology focused on supporting virtual team working, with a new approach that has not been specifically addressed in the existing literature and some guide line for future research extracted.

ABSTRACTProblem statement: Although, literature proves the importance of the technology role in the effectiveness of virtual Research and Development (R&D) teams for new product development. However, the factors that make technology construct in a virtual R&D team are still ambiguous. The manager of virtual R&D teams for new product development does not know which type of technology should be used. Approach: To address the gap and answer the question, the study presents a set of factors that make a technology construct. The proposed construct modified by finding of the field survey (N = 240). We empirically examine the relationship between construct and its factors by employing the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). A measurement model built base on the 19 preliminary factors that extracted from literature review. The result shows 10 factors out of 19 factors maintaining to make technology construct. Results: These 10 technology factors can be grouped into two constructs namely Web base communication and Web base data sharing. The findings can help new product development managers of enterprises to concentrate in the main factors for leading an effective virtual R&D team. In addition, it provides a guideline for software developers as well. Conclusion: The second and third generation technologies are now more suitable for developing new products through virtual R&D teams.

ABSTRACT Nowadays, the world’s scientific community has been publishing an enormous number of papers in different scientific fields. In such environment, it is essential to know which databases are equally efficient and objective for literature searches. It seems that two most extensive databases are Web of Science and Scopus. Besides searching the literature, these two databases used to rank journals in terms of their productivity and the total citations received to indicate the journals impact, prestige or influence. This article attempts to provide a comprehensive comparison of these databases to answer frequent questions which researchers ask, such as: How Web of Science and Scopus are different? In which aspects these two databases are similar? Or, if the researchers are forced to choose one of them, which one should they prefer? For answering these questions, these two databases will be compared based on their qualitative and quantitative characteristics.

Author(s):Bernadett Koles, (Central European University), Peter Nagy, (Central European University)
Citation:Bernadett Koles, Peter Nagy, (2014) "Individual and Professional Development in the Digital Age: Towards a Conceptual Model of Virtual Worlds for Organizations", Management Research Review, Vol. 37 Iss: 3
Article type:Conceptual paper
Publisher:Emerald Group Publishing Limited
Abstract:Purpose - The current paper embraces an interdisciplinary approach to illustrate some of the ways in which virtual worlds expanded upon the individual, social and professional options of employees in organizational settings.
Design/methodology/approach - Through an extensive literature review, the paper compiles the latest and most fundamental research capturing relevant concepts from the fields of psychology, pedagogy, management and human-computer interaction.
Findings - The current conceptual model incorporates individual and group level outcomes associated with virtual world participation, along three primary dimensions; namely self-reference, role experimentation and social capital, accounting for potential variation based on the extent of organizational engagement.
Practical implications - The three proposed dimensions elaborated in the current model, including reflexivity / transference, role playing / role identification, and group collaboration / virtual teams, enable organizations to understand the likely outcomes of their virtual presence from the perspective of their structural and social attributes.
Originality/value - The proposed conceptual model offers a theoretical base for academics and practitioners to expand upon and develop concrete practical examples and cases.

Emergent leader detection and identification in a virtual team environment: A grounded theory study
byShehab Nasser, Faisal, D.M., UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX, 2013, 251 pages; 3577287

Abstract:

One challenge facing organizations using virtual teams
is the inability to detect, identify, select, and develop emergent
leaders working in the virtual team environment, which might increase
the organizational risk of a shortage in leadership resources. The
purpose of the qualitative, grounded theory research study was to define
a theory about the emergent leader detection and identification process
in a virtual team environment, using data systematically obtained and
analyzed through the constant comparative method. Twenty-four virtual
team members, virtual team leaders, and virtual team managers
participated in semi-structured telephone interviews. The data analysis
produced 74 themes and subthemes to provide a deeper understanding of
the phenomena. Five common themes emerged to group 69 subthemes:
responsibility, characteristics, constraints, facilitation, and
outcomes. The theory provided information about the individuals
responsible for the detection and identification of emergent leaders in a
virtual team environment, characteristics useful to help detect and
identify emergent leaders, areas of constraint in identification, areas
facilitating
identification, and risks and opportunities resulting from
the organizational ability or inability to detect emergent leaders in a
virtual team environment. Future research could provide support for the
findings of this study by replicating the study using traditional teams,
larger teams, or teams with more diverse backgrounds and compositions.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the
effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development on
country's scientific ranking as measured by H-index. Moreover, this
study applies ICT development sub-indices including ICT Use, ICT Access
and ICT skill to find the distinct effect of these sub-indices on
country's H-index. To this purpose, required data for the panel of 14
Middle East countries over the period 1995 to 2009 is collected.
Findings of the current study show that ICT development increases the
H-index of the sample countries. The results also indicate that ICT Use
and ICT Skill sub-indices positively contribute to higher H-index but
the effect of ICT access on country's H-index is not clear. © 2005-2013

Abstract

Technology and globalization have created an environment in which teams
communicate and collaborate, across time, geography, and organizations. Team
members possess knowledge and must communicate and collaborate to accomplish
tasks. Communication and collaboration lead to better results, reducing
organizational costs, and preventing and solving conflict between participants.
Enterprise collaboration systems (ECS) are basically an information systems that
enhance communication, coordination and collaboration among the members of
teams and workgroups. They help people in an organization to work together more
effectively to achieve organizational goals.

Abstract:
This paper examines the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI)
of the Islamic Republic of Iran based on those of Malaysia that have
been successful in attracting FDI since the early 1980s. The model
adopted was based on a previous study on FDI determinants in Malaysia.
Results of multiple regression analysis to determine whether FDI
determinants in Iran are of the same significance as they are for
Malaysia showed that none of the determinants under the study (economic
growth, growth of export, exchange rate and balance of payment), except
for government expenditure, is significant in affecting the flow of FDI
in the case of Iran. On the basis of these results, the conclusion is
drawn that these typical determinants fail to reflect the case of Iran.
The study argues that one needs to look at Iran from a different
perspective of FDI as the country is an outlier in the global economy
owing to international sanctions.

PMT-Workshop_FlyerIntroduction

Publishing a high quality paper in
scientific journals is only the mid point towards receiving citation in
the future. The balance of the journey is completed by advertising and
disseminating the publications by using the proper “
Research Tools”.
Familiarity with the tools allows the researchers to increase their
h-index in a short time. H-index shows the academicians influence in the
specified field of research. Therefore, an academician with a higher
level of h-index is deemed to have publications of higher quality
resulting in higher citations.

The number of citations contributes to over 30% in deciding the
ranking of a university. Therefore, most of the scientists  are looking
for an effective method to increase their citation record. Nader has developed and introduced
a method for increasing the visibility of the research which directly
affects on the number of citations. The following examples of two
researchers prove that publication marketing is indeed effective. Both
researchers have used the “Publication Marketing Tools” since the
beginning of 2012.

Objective

The workshop seeks to serve the following objectives:

• To increase a paper’s visibility, accessibility,

• To improve the quality of the article title and keywords

• To search and analyze the right journal to submit.

• To disseminate the publications by using “Research Tools” in order to increase citation

• To trace the citation

Who should attend?

The workshop is aimed at professors, lecturers, postgraduate
students, researchers who have published any papers and would like to
increase their papers’ visibility and number of citations. The
“publication marketing tools” uncovered at the workshop is useful across
various research disciplines and research institutions. Participants
should be familiar with using scientific databases and reference
management software. Basic computer skills are a prerequisite to attend
this workshop.
